so....

Was machst du denn da? ....

__________

A fictitious trip into chaos

Just a little trip to the year 20xx (???)…

I am sitting here in front of the TV watching the news. Doesn’t look good…

The economy crashed 14 weeks ago… From one day to the next we couldn’t get any more money out of the banks. All shops are closed, no one is selling anything because rumor has it that money will be worthless. They fear a currency reform and that in that case the euro will not be exchanged but instead become worthless.

So it’s just good that on the day the banks closed we went shopping right away. All the money we had went into food and diesel.

Now there is no more public transportation, the streets are empty… no vehicles on the roads. Only police and soldiers in the streets. As of late a curfew is in place. Nobody is allowed to leave their quarters after dark.

Oh my, power is out once again. Now we can but wait. Well, there has been no more gas for 2 weeks now. Water is only available between 1 and 3 pm. Internet and telephone aren’t working any more either, you can only dial emergency services.

I am now in the basement every day packing all the supplies into boxes. All equipment is already packed away. The canisters with the diesel are now in the washing basement; I don’t dare leave them in the garage any more for fear of someone breaking in there. I now cook in the basement as well, ready-made meals out of cans are on the menu. These are heated in a water bath… this way you don’t smell anything, no one need know that we still have food.

Then tomorrow morning one of us will go out and take his or her place in the queue for bread. No more margarine or butter for spread either. Only a quarter litre of milk for everyone. Sometimes you get a few potatoes or fruits. And these too are said to be cut on in the future.

We are not allowed to go out into the woods or on the meadows any more either; authorities threaten to punish anyone who takes anything out of nature. Authorities ordered us to take all food we obtained from our garden to the collection office. Well done of them to have prepared a list a plethora of plants is not listed on. In this case I love the authorities.

My topis and crosne, tropaeolum and campanula… for them these ain’t food, so we can crop them unpunished and use for ourselves.

Power is back on. My washing machine just started running again. Just a quick glance at the TV program.

Oh no, they set up border controls once again 2 hours ago… no one is allowed to leave or enter the country.

Oh… this sucks… they searched one family’s home and confiscated their supplies. Now the parents fear being put in jail because they didn’t turn their food in at the collection office. Just a good thing that none of our neighbors know of our supplies.

Now… after having no electricity for a full 2 days and my washing machine stopped working after half of the washing time, I can finally turn it on once again. Good that I don’t need to rely on noon time for water as we have our own home water equipment.

I’m watching the news right now… looting going on… supermarket warehouses are being broken into, hundreds fighting for the foods. There were 5 casualties due to this.

Police and Federal Army have no chance to fight this effectively. Now TV reports the news that soldiers and police have been explicitly ordered to shoot looters.

A father killed his entire family, his wife and four children, then jumped off of a high-rise building.

There are no more news at all from abroad. No one knows what is going on in other countries.

As if this weren’t enough, it starts getting cold. Last night we already had frost with –7°C. And it’s said to get even colder. Though it’s only just September.

Men, women and children from the age of 13 are called to report for work service. Fields have to be harvested quickly. Small children will be taken care of if need be. Those who work on the fields get a piece of meat per week plus an extra 600 grams of wheat and 1 litre of milk.

And still no one knows what will be next. When will there be money again, and how will all of this go? When will we be able to shop once again like we were used to?

The Federal Chancellor is urging everyone to stay calm once again, saying they were busy working towards the goal that everything will be in order soon. No word about how they are planning to achieve this or how long it’s going to take.

3 and a half months without money, no proper food to eat… starting tomorrow there will be a mere 250 grams of wheat corns and 200 ml of milk for everyone, plus 50 ml of oil, and please bring the vessels to carry the stuff with you to the distribution office.

———

As I think about it, all I want is to get out of here… but what does it look like elsewhere? There’s just no info at all. And what do I do with the supplies? I can’t take them with me… if they check on you with that…. Going by car isn’t possible either, I think… where from, where to, for what reason… why do you still have fuel…

And above all I now have a waste disposal problem… Until now I washed the cans and stepped on them until they were flat. In theory I have plenty of space in the attic to store these, but I ran out of dishwashing soap. Now the remnants are slowly starting to rot because I can’t get the cans totally clean even with sand. If I now have to resort to burying them in the garden at night…

Now the neighbors are paying much more attention as to what the others are doing. Just yesterday one saw me digging out the campanula roots.

What are you doing there? … Yes, err, I need the roots to make cough syrup, and it’s harvesting time for these now as they have the best active agent content now. Phew, made it this time. Good that they don’t know these are edible.

Somehow everything is so insecure these days.

A look back…

I still remember before the economy crashed… we were on the Internet on the message board discussing a lot about what might happen and when would happen what. A lot of what I am going through now I had already seen in dreams. I had typed my fingers sore because I wanted the people on the board to prepare.

I had foreseen the crash, and that the banks would close I had seen as well… I knew a lot in advance, even that I should have gone to France… I didn’t do it, I didn’t trust my own dreams. It was a mistake not to have put the supplies on the trailer right after shopping and the equipment and head off right away. At that point in time no one would have noticed as the borders were still open.

Well, now it’s too late, I have to wait and see what becomes of this.

Last Monday we registered for work service. It was a horrible week. Every muscle aches from the work we’re not used to. There is no fuel for tractors, the corn has to be mown using scythes and sickles. This is mostly done by the men. Women and children then collect the culms with the ears to the top and bind them together to form sheaves. These are then put up on the field and one goes on for the next sheaf.

From this my hands are raw as a rasp on the inside, even though I take a bit of oil every evening and rub it into my hands. One more day and I have enough oil to prepare it with the arnica blossoms from the garden. I hope that in 2 to 3 weeks’ time I will then have an oil that makes my hands smooth again.

Today is Saturday, we need to get another 2 rows of potatoes out of the ground, and then we will get our extra ration. One hour later we’re finally done. No one can walk upright any more, it’s just too much of a pain in the back.

Now we finally receive our extra ration. Meat… one tiny chop, perhaps 150 grams in weight and too few fat on it. The farmer didn’t get any corn, this is good for us because now he gives out 1 kg of potatoes for everyone. 3 chops of meat, I keep thinking about what I will prepare from that… fry it or make a stew for several days? 3 litres of milk, we’re going to have muesli at home—we should still have 5 buckets.

Anyway, back home now, I still have a jar of horse ointment, that will help somewhat against the muscle tension. In earlier times we would have a hot bath, but that isn’t possible any more. The gas deliveries they promised are still not coming. Thus, now a bowl of muesli for everyone and then off to bed.

Sunday… I am out of bed before dawn once again. I made my decision, I’m going to cook stew from the potatoes and 2 of the meat chops. The other chop will be fried and shared between us 3. Good that I still have plenty of onions in the attic. The meat is fried with a bit of oil, and when it’s almost done I add the 6 chopped onions. Add salt, pepper and tomato puree for spices and serve with 2 slices of white bread.

White bread is very easy to make. Mix 1 kg of wheat, 1 table spoon of salt, a bit of curry powder or ground pepper and 1 tea spoon of sugar, 1 pack of dry yeast, add 450 ml of water and then knead until the dough feels silky. If the dough is too dry, add some water, if it sticks, add a bit of wheat. Then wait until the dough has about doubled in volume. Then knead once again and bring it into shape. Powder it all around with wheat, then either put it into a baking pan or place it plainly on the tray. Pre-heat the baking stove, place a metal bowl with hot water at the bottom. After 15 minutes put the tray with the dough into the stove and bake it for 10 minutes at 200°C and another 50 minutes at 180°C. The bread is done if you knock under it with your finger knuckle and it sounds hollow.

I just hope the bread will finish… not that power goes off again when it’s in the stove.

Title: Re: A Fictitious Trip into Chaos
Post by vzduch on 12/19/08 at 09:54:13 — Part 4 —

Now it’s been a while since I last wrote something down.

It’s mid-October now and field work is done. At the moment there is hardly any community work to do. Some older women are now knitting scarves and gloves for the children. It has gotten cold much earlier than expected.

Nighttime temperature is at –10°C at times and there is still no gas. Power outages are getting more frequent. Sometimes we are without power for up to 20 hours. Now we’re sitting at home with our jackets and scarves on and a cover over our bodies watching TV. What else should we do?

There is still no money. The Chancellor is talking about delays in deliveries for the central banks. Without these deliveries they cannot print any money. Nothing more about it except that it might take another few weeks. We’re told to stay calm, they are doing everything to get the economy running again.

In various big cities there have been demonstrations. The population doesn’t want to live like this any more. But now they are sending soldiers against the protesters. Starting October 25 all demonstrations are prohibited anyway. State of emergency…

Here at our place it’s pretty quiet as of yet. In the morning we go to the distribution office for food and besides this we can go to the soup kitchen at the elementary school in the evening. At the kindergarten they set up an emergency quarter. They still have oil heating and one can go there to warm up. Many an elderly person and families with small children are staying there for the night as well.

Just a good thing that we still have plenty of propane gas. This way I can turn on the catalytic heater for half an hour in between times. When we have power I cook on the two-plate stove I carried upstairs from the basement. Other than that I am cooking with propane gas. For the night I fill hot tea into PET bottles; these are taken with us into bed and the tea is then drunk in the morning. I also took our winter sleeping bags into the bedroom.

We are now sleeping all in one bed, this way we can mutually warm ourselves. When it’s cold like this—in the meantime it’s –15°C at night—I don’t like our son to lie in bed alone.

October 30. We had snow… 50 cm tonight and it’s still snowing. At least it’s not that cold any more because of this. In the neighborhood an elderly couple has died, presumably due to hypothermia. They were found together in their bed.

Until a short time ago people had been talking about these unbearable circumstances at the distribution offices or at the soup kitchen… now people just walk past each other in silence and get their food and return home quickly. Not even the kiddies are running around any more and they have forgotten how to laugh.

There is nothing to do except watching TV or listening to some music every now and then. OK, I am baking bread every other day. My neighbor from across the street already asked me whether I could bake for her as well if she hands me her ration of corn. Of course I can. But not using her corn; this I collect until I used up my wheat. I still have some 50 kg in buckets. That’ll last me another 3 to 4 months. Just then the corn will be ground.

I also solved the problem with my cans… I put them in the baking stove and have them heat up for 10 minutes at 250°C. Afterwards all residue in the cans is bone dry and cannot rot any more. Now I can well store them in the attic.

The doorbell rings… who could this be? Oh, my mother. She has come from Rheine all the way to our place by bicycle, a suitcase on the carrier… She says she can’t stand being home alone, and whether she could stay with us. Of course she can… But first we will have to go to the municipal council and resolve the issue of her food ration… Did she deregister in Rheine??? No, she didn’t…

So the next day we walk to Rheine to have her deregistered. All of us are there so we could take some supplies and a few other things with us. 10 km to Rheine, 8 km to the council and back and then another 10 km back home. So our hand-cart finally served us for something. Had we had to carry all this stuff in backpacks, we wouldn’t have been home before sunset. Only we have missed food distribution for this day.

Well, I still have some bread left that I fry crisp in the pan with a little fat, in addition I cut two slices of ham for everyone. Then I quickly made some tea and then off to bed.

November 12. Now it’s been 5 days of temperatures between 9 and 12°C. They reduced TV broadcasting to one hour from 8 pm. Basically one need not listen to the news any more, same old story over and over… delays… blah blah…

5:15 pm, we hear a funny grumbling noise, can’t determine what it is and where it comes from. We feel a bit eerie.

Ahhh, what is this? It starts to shake… The ground is moving… I watch in fascination as a cupboard door opens up and the cups fall out… then I start to realize… this is an earthquake. Upstairs something has made a loud booming noise, I run up the stairs to have a look… only to recall that during an earthquake one better leave the house. I scream, ‘Get out everyone!’… and want to run down the stairs as the next quake arrives. I can barely hold on to the rail, otherwise I would have probably been downstairs faster than I’d have liked it.

Great, now we’ve been standing in the open garage for 3 hours, it started raining 1 hour ago and no one dares go back inside the house. Half an hour later we then decide to get in anyway and hope that there won’t be another quake.

Say good-bye to boredom… we take all the sleeping utensils downstairs into the living room, no one wants to sleep upstairs any more.

I turn on the TV… endless news broadcast… The first quake was a 4.5, epicenter in the vicinity of Verden, Lower Saxony. The second was a 5. They don’t expect any more quakes.

As it’s quite late already we don’t cook any more. I prepare a hot cup of soup for everyone and then we go to sleep.

It’s a bit uncomfortable in the living room, this is going to be an unrestful night.
